Archiving Fandom

VERY rough draft, basically just notes at the moment.

Basically I want to use as few programs as possible so it's not all spread out and I forget what I have where.

My main tools are:

  • Calibre
  • Associated formatting tools: Dotepub, Google Docs
  • Archivebox (possibly, if I can get it to work)
  • JDownloader

My organization is focused on using Calibre for as much as it makes sense to. I want to balance between being organized and being able to actually use/read the files I save. Calibre works great for the following: fanfic, meta/blog posts/etc. (once converted to a readable format), podfic. I've also jailbroken the library format to organize the following: fanvids

Calibre can actually handle a lot, though because of how it organizes its files (by author) you basically need to use the program to

Data files can add attached things, so I can add fanfic, extra covers, audio, etc.

  • Backup to physical harddive (portable)
  • Backup to secondary harddrive (1x a year when I visit my storage unit)
  • Cloud back - NOT SET UP
  • Calibre + FanFicFare for AO3 and certain other archives (see full list here)
  • Copy-paste text to Doc, import to Calibre + convert to epub
    • previously saved as HTML, but that restricts me to only reading on my computer, and I prefer reading on my phone/Kindle when possible (especially for long fanfics)
  • Separate Calibre library for deleted fics that people have shared online, that I personally haven't read and may not want, but want to keep track of just in case
  • Also for mass-downloading fanfics in a specific fandom to load onto Kindle for later rather than plug up my main fanfic archive library
  • Save image (usually just right-click save works) to folder sorted by fandom
    • Filename: Title by artist [year.month.day]
  • problem: TikTok fanart is audio/visual and most don't let you download to your phone. Need to use 3rd party software for that

Use JDownloader (works on most things) and sort into folders by fandom

  • Not sure yet. Have Joplin, have ArchiveBox. Haven't made an effort to do this properly and keep putting it off.
  • Archive.org Wayback Machine
  • Usually can just save the files as normal. Put into folder sorted by fandom
    • Filename: Title [year]
  • New procedure: add to Calibre in separate library perhaps? or in FF library?
  • Make entry in Calibre library (if on AO3, use FFF)
  • Download audio file using whatever means needed
  • Attach file(s) to Calibre entry using Data Files
    • m4b or m4a is fine as well

Haven't done this and don't really see the need to for my personal archive, though I can understand it's general importance as a fan effort

  • Right-click save as normal, sorted by fandom
    • problem is I don't always keep track of the creators which is a problem
  • Right-click save as normal, then sorted into music collection
    • tagged with fandom within program
      • the problem is I haven't actually listened to my own music in years (streaming) so I don't have a decent program to use any longer. I used to use iTunes but it's kind of bloated now.
      • Update: I downloaded Foobar2000 and am trying to use that AND listen to my own stuff, yay!
