1. hp-iconchallenge is a new icon community for Harry Potter icons! I've been wanting to get back into icon making (after a 8 year hiatus…) but wasn't sure if icon-making was really still a THING. So it's nice to see new icon communities pop up, shows there's still interest in them.

2. jesse-the-k put together a reading list of Dreamwidth-local posts, including some discussions about friending on DW, Pillowfort, and social media.

3. We’re all Just Starting to Realize the Power of Personal Data on Wired – yeah, actually, even my PARENTS (hardcore Facebook users) are starting to worry about what's happening to their data online.

4. fandomtrumpshate, a “pan-fandom fanworks auction dedicated to supporting those who are most vulnerable under the current United States presidential administration” is opening signups on January 6th.

5. jesse-the-k put together a fun MCU fanfic recommendation list with some “weirdly specific themes” such as Coulson is a Gentleman Detective.

6. It may be Sunday, but it's never too late to leave a comment on jjhunter's Follow Friday post asking for 5 fanfics or other serial media you're currently following!

6b. Mine are: On the Strength of the Evidence series (Granchester); Possible series (Fantastic Beasts); If This Be Error (Yuri!!! On Ice); The Slow Seduction of Eddie Brock (Venom); What You Need (Venom).

This reminded me that Sin Eater (Credence/Original!Percival Graves) by xzombiekittenx is finished now and I should probably catch up on reading it! I loved the first few chapters; definitely recommend it if you're into Fantastic Beasts fics.

7. When I first decided to build my site, I knew I wanted to join a bunch of fanlistings. At the time, I thought they were a dying fan thing, but that turned out to be an incorrect assumption! There are new ones being made all the time! I've joined six so far, and am working on joining more. You don't need a site to join a fanlisting; if you're interested, there's the Anime Fanlistings Network and the The Fanlistings Network to look through and get you started.

Note from 2025: Check out my fanlistings here!

Fandom in Stitches - multi-fandom quilt patterns designed by fans. I have no interest in making my own quilt, but I LOVE the patterns they've come up with! My favorite is the Harry Potter bookcase.

switching.social - interesting in moving away from companies who spy on all your stuff and then sell it to advertisers? This website's got a bunch of alternatives to popular sites/apps, many of them free/open source/community-run.

Game Haus Cafe - pay a nomimal cover charge and have access to over 1500 board games for as long as you want! I need to go to Glendale, brb.

We Should Replace Facebook With Personal Websites - it's interesting how there's a pretty wide movement to “go back” to an ealier version of the web, where people aren't dependent on huge social media corporations to share their content. It's not just fandom folks who want more control, safety, and less advertising!

VHS Preservation Project Announces Founding Members - some universities are banding together to preserve VHS media! The project page is here: https://videotrust.org/

Disney*Pixar's short film BAO is on Youtube for a few more days. It made me want to hug my mom.

From Twitter:

why do people think librarians are “cute” and developers are “geniuses”? i’m trying to build & advocate for systems that protect your right to surveillance free information while so called geniuses are transforming every last iota of communication into the biometrics of control

A selection of links and comments:

1. I've been exploring the Network, Latest Things, and Random Journal pages. The first is under the Read tab, the latter two under Explore. It's a good way to find new people/comms/posts to read, and it's almost like wandering though the suggested feeds page on Tumblr.

2. Found this on one of the above explorations: Great British Bake-Off Watch Order for Netflix people.

3. Use comic sans font to write faster. Wish I had known about this in grad school.

4. Tomorrow, December 17th, is Pornday on Dreamwidth. Post stuff!

4b. 12/17 is also Tumblr Death Day. What are you planning to do with your accounts? I'm waffling between deleting mine or just abandoning it.

5. Harry Potter and the Secret Gay Love Story:

The Harry Potter years also happened to coincide with the Wild West era of the internet and the rise of abstinence-only sex education; as a result, for better or for worse, erotic Harry Potter fan fiction played a major and under-discussed role in millennial sexual development. This was especially true if you were queer—or, not to put too fine a point on it, if you were me—and had picked up on the secret gay love story that existed between the lines of Rowling’s text.
I refer, of course, to Sirius and Lupin.

6. Comm plug of the week: zines_not_mags, which could use some more members and posts and activity, like many of the poor comms on DW.

7. I figured out how to upload a custom mood theme AND I found one with K9. ♥

How has your week been? Found any interesting tidbit? Share in the comments!
